We will be moving to Los Angeles in July this summer and begin partnering with a church in Westwood called The Commons LA this fall. Our plan is to embed in the life of The Commons for at least a year while we transition, reacclimatize to the culture, and prayerfully discern where exactly God is calling us to plant. We hope to love, serve, and learn from them as best we can while beginning to raise funds and build a core team of people to join us in the new venture. While we engage in the community and mission of The Commons, I will also be pursuing my membership with the Acts 29 Network, and participating in further development through Redeemer City to City in LA and Southeastern Seminary classes.
The Commons LA is a new church in Westwood near UCLA seeking to follow Jesus for the flourishing of Los Angeles. As a church, they look to live together for Jesus, find joy and fullness in him, and use the gifts, influence, and resources he has entrusted to them to serve their community. They hope to multiply disciples, ministry leaders, and communities while prayerfully discerning where Jesus is leading them to plant a new church.
Reliant is the missionary sending organization that I will be working for as a church planter. Reliant partners with missional churches and gospel centered non-profits around the world by mobilizing support-based missionaries for the Great Commission. They are a registered 501(c)3 and are a part of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. They are helping make what we want to do in planting a church possible.
The Austin Stone has played a vital role these past two years in my Pastoral & Church Planting Residency which you can learn more about here. Part of my time with the Stone has been finding clarity and conviction for church planting which the leaders have been able to affirm. They are sending us to LA and will continue to play a substantial role in our desire to plant both financially and in pastoral care and support.
The Acts 29 Network is a diverse, global family of church-planting churches that exists to encourage, resource, support, and equip churches to plant churches. They have a robust application process to assess a pastor's character and competency through a theological and pastoral questionnaire, interview, and assessment conference. I have currently been approved as a potential planter. Melissa and I will be attending an assessment conference in the near future.
